I Missed NaPoWriMo? Starting in May Instead! 1st Prompt

I messed up, guys. I told myself I was going to do NaPoWriMo, (National Poetry Writing Month: writing a poem a day in the month of April), and about halfway through April I realized I’d missed the beginning of the month. I’m a bit of an all or nothing kind of person. I want to do a full month. So starting today, May 1st, I will be doing my own NaPoWriMo for the month of May. Even better, as punishment for missing April, (and because May is 31 days long) I will be writing not 30 but 31 poems this month!

Most of them will suck. I’m prepared for this.

But a poem a day is not that crazy, and if it kicks me back into writing on a daily basis, it’s worth it.

Having said that, I won’t be posting my poems on here because I don’t like to self-publish any creative work that might potentially (after a great deal of revision) be good enough to publish elsewhere. However, for each day of this challenge I will be sharing either a prompt or a topic I’ve been trying to tackle in poetry, since that may offer some inspiration (and it’ll help me make sure I keep doing this every day).

Here goes.

Prompt #1:

Choose an article of clothing that is meaningful to you. It doesn’t have to be yours, or even something you still own (maybe something  you used to love as a kid) and write a poem that features it in some way.

I’m not sure yet, but I may do a poem about my first pair of pink snow boots. Or my pink Star Wars t-shirt. (Both old articles of clothing. I swear I’m not five. I freaking love that Star Wars t-shirt though.)

Did you do NaPoWriMo this year? Have you tried it in the past, or done any other writing challenges? If you have any thoughts or advice I’m more than happy to consider them, so feel free to leave a comment below.
