Poem a Day in May Prompt 3: Food

Today’s poetry prompt?

Prompt 3:

Let’s write about food. And not because I’m totally obsessed with food and think it’s the key to world peace or anything. (I am, and it totally is.) Let’s write about it because food is such an everyday, universal experience that I think most people, if they think about it, can really milk this topic.

morning, breakfast, kitchen

We won’t just be describing food though. Here are some ideas:

1- Write about your relationship with food, good or bad. Do you love to cook? To eat? Are you a perpetual dieter? Maybe you’ve tried going off meat for a while, or gone vegan. How do you feel about these things? If you made a big food decision, how did others react?

2- Use your five senses and see if there are any foods that trigger a memory you can write about. You don’t have to write just about the food–use the food as a springboard to write about something else. Does the smell of apples remind you of someone? Maybe you remember what you were eating the day you got big news.

3- Is there a food that irritates you? The sound of celery crunching comes to mind. I enjoy the taste of celery, but the sound–eek! Write a hate poem for a food you don’t like. I’d probably do one about Brussels sprouts.

If you try this or any of the prompts I’m sharing throughout this month, let me know! If you try a prompt on your blog, share the link! I’ll check it out.

I also love to read any thoughts or writing tips you may have. Feel free to share them in the comments!

    1. Hi so truth be told these are not mine (I’m a lousy photographer), they’re from Pexels.com. (free CC0 licensed photos, so credit where it’s due) but they are absolutely lovely. If you blog a lot and ever want a photo to just spiff up a post I highly recommend that site since the CC0 license means you can use them for free and freely alter them or use them as needed.

  1. I’ll immediately grab your rss as I can’t in finding your e-mail subscription link or e-newsletter service.
Do you have any? Please allow me recognise so that I may just subscribe.
    Thanks.

    1. Hey thanks for bringing this to my attention! I did not have an e-mail subscription option, but I should have. I’ve just added it. Try moving your mouse to the bottom right hand corner of the screen on any page on my blog. A little blue “Follow” button should appear. I’m working on rearranging my most useful sidebar items to be more visible but right now that should work. If it doesn’t, let me know and I’ll keep playing around with it. Thanks for checking out my blog 🙂
